Abstract
The transport of a variety of nonelectrolytes (C -1 labeled urea, creatinine, mannitol, sucrose, and inulin carboxylic acid) from a ventricular bath into the blood of the choroid plexus was studied in the rabbit. The flow of solute per unit concentration difference was estimated by relating to the mean venous blood flow estimated earlier, the ratio of counts per unit volume of choroidal venous blood to counts per unit volume of ventricular bath. There was found to be a linear relationship between flow per unit concentration difference of the materials and their free diffusional coefficients indicative of unrestricted diffusion across a fractional area of the ependyma of 1. 3 X 10"3, approximately that provided by the intercellular spaces. Additionally, a nondiffusional flow of solute was defined and is considered to represent a volume flow without change in concentration (? pinocytosis). This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
