Abstract
Conceptions of the circuatory system held before Harvey''s clear formulation of the circulation of the blood in 1628 are presented and the environment that promoted the growth of these earlier ideas is considered. The evolution of man''s knowledge of the functions of the cardiovascular system is reviewed from the time of ancient Egypt to the Renaissance. Keywords
