Diffusion of the Intravenous Technique Among Narcotic Addicts in the United States

Abstract
The spread of the intraveous (IV) technique of administering narcotics among addicts in the USA was facilitated by involvement in a drug subculture. This conclusion is supported by an analysis of data on a sample of Lexington patients over the period of 1935-1965, by case material on 5 addicts, and by a review of the addiction literature. These sources also showed that IV use 1st occurred about 1925 increased slowly until about 1932-1933, then rapidly to 1940, and has since been the usual route for addicts.
