A New Species of Paracaesio (Pisces: Lutjanidae) from the Fiji Islands

Abstract
A species of deep water lutjanid, P. stonei sp. nov., is described from 2 specimens caught in Fiji waters at a depth of 220 m. The new species is distinctly different from P. kusakarii and P. gonzalesi which also occur in Fiji aters. It differs from P. kusakarii in possessing a naked maxillary, in lacking the characteristic hump on the head and in having larger eyes and more prominent dentition. It is easily distinguishable from P. gonzalesi by the notable absence of the yellow slash running to the 10th dorsal spine from the beginning of the lateral line, caudal fin coloration and the much deeper body. The gill raker count in P. stonei is 28, compared to 31 in P. gonzalesi, based on 2 specimens of the former and 3 individuals of the latter species examined from Fiji waters.
