Abstract
The Iowa scale of severity of stuttering was employed to train observers to recognize levels of severity of the vocal characteristics of stuttering. Mean scale values for levels of severity were obtained for 12 5-min. samples of stuttering. Consecutive judgments were made at 9-sec. intervals on each sample by 11 trained observers. This method is useful for assigning rank order positions of severity to samples of continuous stuttered speech. Further experimentation is needed to demonstrate whether or not the method is useful to obtain precise scale values. Keywords
