A method of measuring alveolar ventilation utilizing a portable mass spectrometer to determine the rate of N2 elimination from the lungs of a subject breathing O2 is described. Control values were obtained using normal subjects. Results obtained from patients with pulmonary emphysem show marked deviation from the control values. Keywords
