Abstract
Despite the known hazards of tartrazine in sensitive individuals,1 its use as a dye remains widespread and there has been no official requirement to declare its presence in foods or medicines. There has, however, been pressure in the UK and Europe to require manufacturers to specify all food additives on food labels. As early as 1973 a list of food and drugs free from additives was published in Sweden.
