An Expanded Role for Bronchial Brushings in Respiratory Disease

Abstract
The use of the bronchial brush technique in evaluating lung masses of unknown etiology is of recognized value (1–5). Previous reports have been concerned primarily with the diagnosis of cancer. The potential role of microbiology in examination of bronchial brushings has not been emphasized. In this study, specimens from 11 of 20 cancer patients and 20 of 29 noncancer patients were examined microbiologically. Pathogenic organisms were identified in 7. In 5, the correct diagnosis was a direct result of brushing. Microbiologic evaluation can increase the yield and thus expand the role of bronchial brushing in respiratory disease.
