Abstract
The negotiation and subsequent introduction of a 37½ hour week/9-day fortnight for employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, at the end of 1980, represented a significant change in the practice of industrial relations among the various parties involved. This article examines the context within which the negotiations were undertaken, the process by which the eventual agreement was reached, the implementation and monitoring of the agreement, and the implications of the agreement, particularly for the parties involved. Attention is paid to the factors prompting the apparent reversal in SECV industrial relations policies. It is concluded that those who argued for the change have been vindicated in their belief that it would bring about a long-term improvement in SECV industrial relations. Keywords
