Parathyroid Hormone and Calcitonin in Magnesium-Deficient Calves

Abstract
Plasma PTH [parathyroid hormone] and CT [calcitonin] levels were measured during hypocalcemia induced by experimental Mg-deficiency in calves. The parathyroid glands of Mg-deficient calves do not respond satisfactorily when hypocalcemia occurs. The severity of the hypocalcemia observed in Mg-deficient calves is probably dependent on a double mechanism: the lack of response of the parathyroid glands to a fall in plasma Ca and the lack of response of target organs to a relatively low level of endogenous PTH.
