Abstract
This paper is based on a study of 100 unselected cases in which a diagnosis of benign papilloma of the urinary bladder was made at the time of the first cystoscopic examination. In all cases studied, a minimum of five years had elapsed since the first fulguration. We have included cases with an original diagnosis of benign papilloma in which carcinoma of the bladder developed in less than five years. Cases were also included in which the diagnosis of benign papilloma was made, but, because of some doubt, repeated cystoscopic examinations and further microscopic studies were made and they showed carcinoma. The objectives of this study were to determine the accuracy of the original cystoscopic diagnosis, and the duration of life after the initial diagnosis and fulguration.
