I Inner Ear Changes in Otosclerosis

Abstract
The results of the histological examination of the temporal bones of 3 patients, 81, 69 and 70 yrs. old, are reported, in whom the audiometric examination had shown a marked sensorineural component in their hearing loss. A careful analysis of the histological findings leads to the conclusion that at least in 2 patients the sensorineural loss was not simply due to old age but that the otosclerotic process had been a contributing factor. The assumption that the specific sensorineural hearing loss encountered in otosclerosis occurs in cases in which the focus extends the endosteum of the cochlear scalae and is caused by damage to the sensorineural elements by substances released into the labyrinthine fluids either by the focus itself or possibly by the congested stria vascularis is regarded as an acceptable working hypothesis.
