Effect of Iodide on Thyroid Glands of Rats Kept at Low Temperature.

Abstract
Addition of KI at a level of 0.05% in the diet caused involution of the thyroid glands of rats maintained at room temp, or at 4[degree]C. The mechanism of this effect may correspond to the involuting actions of iodide in patients with hyperthyroidism. It is suggested that iodide may stimulate the secretion of an I-poor colloid into the lumen of the thyroid follicles by a mechanism related to its stimulating influence on salivation.
