Abstract
Hypophysectomy markedly reduces the ability of the rat to concentrate urine. Measurement of plasma and urine osmolality at various periods of water deprivation show that the inability to concentrate urine is reflected in an increased plasma osmolality. ADH, as the tannate in oil, failed to restore to normal either plasma or urine concentrations. The osmotic gradient along the length of the papilla, as indicated from measurement of solute concentrations of urine and papillary tissue fluid, is reduced in hypophysectomized rats and is not restored to normal by ADH. The data indicate that other pituitary hormones are required for maximum response to ADH.This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
