Abstract
The retention of acids by serum was considered in relation to the change of pH of the serum. The "Retention Coefficient" R, representing the amt. of retention per unit decrease of pH, was used" to calculate the retention of carbonic and lactic acids by serum. Methods were described for the calculation and estimation of R. The application of this principle to the measurement of tissue metabolism in serum was described. By this means it was possible to calculate the value of the retention for any given pressure change, an advantage not possessed by other methods of determining retention. The retention caused by the presence of substances of known dissociation constant was described.
