Abstract
A general variational formulation of the optimal column problem in which the column shape is either prescribed over given segments or can be varied continuously is outlined. Necessary conditions are derived for the optimal location of segment boundaries and internal supports. Most previously published optimality criteria are shown to be special cases of the general conditions presented. The proposed theory is illustrated with examples. Keywords
