Abstract
If matter is inhomogeneous at recombination, some of it can be prevented from collapsing immediately into compact objects by a ‘feedback’ mechanism in which a diffuse gaseous component, photoionized by compact sources, is frozen to the comoving frame by Compton drag on the microwave background. When Compton drag becomes ineffective, clouds of gas collapse into potential wells formed by the compact objects; the mass and final density of these clouds are characteristic of elliptical galaxies if the compact objects cluster gravitationally in a manner similar to the apparent hierarchical clustering of galaxies themselves. The predicted ratio of light-to-dark matter is also consonant with observations. Keywords
