Women and the Postindustrial Welfare State

Abstract
Current welfare programs evolved from the economic and social problems of the Great Depression. In the past half century, however, the context of work, family, and demography has changed radically. The population has aged; the stable, two-parent nuclear family is no longer predominant, and a service-based economy has replaced the smokestack world of manufacturing.
