Consideration of Dose-Weight Relationships

Abstract
The use of a wt. correction factor in expressing the susceptibility of rats to alpha-naphthyl-thiourea (ANTU) has led to the erroneous conclusion by others that there is marked age and wt. variation in the susceptibility of wild Norway rats to ANTU. When expressed as dose/animal, the toxicity of ANTU appears to be constant over a wide age and wt. range for both wild pigmented and laboratory albino rats. The LD50 in mg./animal for wild Norway rats was calculated as 2.63 mg./animal and the LD50 for male Sprague-Dawley albino rats was 0.98 mg./rat. The requirements for a proper correction factor of dose/wt. of animal are discussed.
