Normal dilatation of the proximal ureters in children

Abstract
Dilatation of the upper 2/3 of the ureter during excretory urography is a well known, normal phenomenon in adults. It also occurs in children and, to a lesser extent, in infants. To investigate this phenomenon in the pediatric population, 1000 normal excretory urograms were reviewed. The dilatation appeared to be caused by compression of the ureter at the point of crossing by the common iliac vessels, and it was seen in about 1/3 of normal pediatric patients.
