Abstract
To equate expected academic achievement with measured IQ level is invalid because of statistical regression effect. Harris, Myklebust, and others have developed formulas pragmatically to match “theory” more closely with the facts of life, but these formulas have no valid mathematical or psychological basis. The probability of any discrepancy between measured intelligence and achievement occurring by chance can be calculated if the reliabilities of the tests and the intercorrelation between the tests are known. This suggests the possibility of a reasonable and legitimate method of psychometrically identifying a group of students that is likely to yield a high concentration of diagnosed cases of learning disabilities. The present article develops such a method and provides specific illustrative tables. Keywords
