The Prevention of Autoimmunity to the Thyroid and Allergic Thyroiditis by Antigenic Competition

Abstract
When bovine gamma globulin (BGG) is mixed with thyroid extract in Freund's complete adjuvant, the BGG competes with the thyroid extract and inhibits the development of allergic thyroiditis as well as the production of antibody and delayed sensitivity to thyroid extract. The amount of BGG required to inhibit the production of thyroiditis, anti-thyroid antibody and delayed sensitivity to thyroid extract depends in part upon the amount of thyroid antigen used to immunize and in part upon the location of the two antigens.
