Quantitative Methods and the Analysis of Social Change: A Case Study

Abstract
Data on 192 sons of 142 fathers in a population of East African Sikhs are analyzed to show cross-generational patterns of social change. The method of log-linear nested hierarchies is applied, which permits us to conclude that social change in this group takes the form of caste-determined occupational mobility. Of wider significance is the demonstration that relatively uncomplicated quantitative methods can add materially to the strength of the conclusions.
