Abstract
STRESS ULCER prophylaxis with agents that affect gastric acidity became standard therapy for physiologically stressed patients after controlled clinical trials demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of gastrointestinal tract bleeding when gastric pH is maintained above 4.0.1-3 Prevention of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding during stress also has been accomplished with the surface-active agent sucralfate, with an efficacy similar to that of acid reduction, in unblinded clinical trials.4-6Keywords
