DDT and its Effect on the Comstock Mealybug and its Parasites

Abstract
Laboratory tests indicated that DDT at 1.5 and 2 lb. per 100 gal. of spray was effective against newly hatched mealybugs (Pseudococcus comstocki). Other immature stages were less affected and mature [female][female] were not killed. DDT was most toxic soon after application. In a heavily infested orchard, DDT at the same rates as the laboratory tests was effective when directed against the young of the 1st and 2d generations or against the 2d generation only. In the laboratory, adults of the parsite Pseuda-phycus sp. were very susceptible to all concs. of DDT. Orchard parasitization was depressed following spraying with DDT but increased when spraying was discontinued. Mites increased greatly on trees sprayed with DDT.
