Abstract
The work described in this chapter on natural environments is designed as an aid in conceptualizing preventive interventions. From the writer's experience in developing preventive services in different parts of the country, the effects of geographical and cultural diversity in limiting or accelerating the development of community services have been clearly observed. The chapter attempts to contribute a conception of preventive interventions by a study of natural environments. More specifically, an emerging ecological thesis is presented by illustrating the kinds of integrative tasks involved in this research program. As an introduction, four principles from field biology are examined to provide the context for the discussion of the research program and its implications for preventive services. Keywords
