The Radiological Hazard from Tritium Sorbed on Metal Surfaces

Abstract
This report describes experiments with volunteer subjects designed to determine the hazard due to handling metal surfaces contaminated with tritium both as tritium gas and tritiated water. Evidence is given for the presence of organically bound tritium in urine after exposure of the skin to tritium gas contaminated surfaces and the significance and chemical form of this organic tritium is discussed. Experiments in which tritium was ingested following hand contamination are described and a comparison is made between the relative hazard of this route of intake with that of percutaneous absorption.
