THE INFLUENCE OF BIRTH WEIGHT ON THE SUBSEQUENT GROWTH OF HYSTERECTOMY-DERIVED PIGS

Abstract
Among 471 piglets reared artificially from hysterectomy, overall survival to 56 days of age was 84.9%. The tendency towards a positive relationship between birth weight and survival was less pronounced than that previously reported for piglets reared naturally. Correlation coefficients between birth weight and measures of subsequent growth to 90 kg were very similar to values previously reported for suckled pigs, but lower regression coefficients indicated a greater opportunity for compensation under artificial rearing conditions.
