Abstract
It is very necessary that the medical profession does not accept unfounded theories as an indication for any therapy, but certainly not for disagreeable treatments like salt-free diet, fluid restriction, surgery. This is especially valid for whimsical ailments like Ménière’s disease, that regularly and spontaneously show symptom-free periods and strong fluctuations. The least that can be asked is that any proposal of a new kind of treatment is only made after a statistical analysis in a prospective investigation which is based on the comparison of two matched groups, one of treated and the other of non-treated patients; if possible, double-blind.
