Abstract
I review some elementary ideas in cosmology and quantum gravity and show how they lead to a description of the birth of the universe according to quantum cosmology using real tunnelling geometries. I apply these ideas to the creation of hyperbolic universes. In this approach the most probable universe is that of least volume or equivalently of least complexity. This leads to a number of interesting and apparently as yet unsolved problems in hyperbolic geometry. Keywords
