Abstract
Subjects varying in age from 20 to 79 years were required to do tasks involving addition by placing counters in squares to achieve predetermined totals in columns and rows. All subjects were considered to be of approximately equal social and educational background of skilled labor and junior management rank. Errors tended to increase with age and difficulty of the tasks. Older subjects could maintain accuracy by increasing time spent up to a point, but when complexity increased beyond this, the attempt would be abandoned due to confusion. Lack of motivation was not a factor.
