Abstract
Gossypol (8,8′-dicarboxaldehyde-1,1′,6,6′,7,7′-hexahydroxy-5 5′-diisopropyl-3, 3′-dimethyl-2, 2′-binaphthalene) concentration was determined for 5 component parts of flower buds collected from 12 lines of cotton. In all but glandless lines, which contain practically no gossypol in any part of the bud, the petals usually contained at least twice the concentration of gossypol as the sepals, stamen, stigma + style, or ovary. The concentration of gossypol in the receptacle in 2 of 4 glanded lines was lower than in any other bud parts; in the other 2 lines, it was lower than in all parts except the ovaries. The size of the bud had no effect on percentage gossypol in Gossypium arboreum L., and only small differences were measured in G. hirsutum L. (M-8 glanded) and G. barbadense L. (Pima S-2).Keywords
