Frequency of Transuterine Migration of Embryos in Ewes and Cows

Abstract
Uteri from pregnant ewes and cows were examined for evidence of transuterine migration. In 934 ewes with one ovulation 8% of fetuses were present in the opposite uterine horn. No evidence of transuterine migration was observed in 643 single ovulating cows. When two ovulations occurred in the same ovary and two fetuses were present 87.5% of 120 ewes and 20% of 10 cows had evidence of transuterine migration. In animals with two ovulations in the same ovary and only one fetus present the surviving fetus was in the opposite uterine horn in 13.9% of 108 ewes and in none of five cows. In animals which had one ovulation in each ovary and two fetuses present evidence of transuterine migration was found in one of 115 ewes and in none of 10 cows. One specimen of each species had evidence of monozygotic twinning and transuterine migration of one embryo was evident in each instance. Copyright © 1972. American Society of Animal Science.
