ANTI-FIBROMATOGENIC ACTION OF A NATURAL CORTICAL HORMONE (DEHYDROCORTICOSTERONE OF KENDALL)1

Abstract
Pellets of dehydrocorticosterone were implanted subcut. into [female] guinea pigs simultaneously with pellets of estradiol. Uterine and other abdominal fibroids elicited by estradiol when present alone in the body were prevented by the simultaneous presence of the natural cortical hormone. The preventive antifibromatogenic action was concomitant with certain other anti-estrogenic actions such as inhibition of uterine overgrowth and of genital bleeding, but there was no inhibition of the growth of the mammary gland. Dehydrocorticosterone behaved in its antifibromatogenic effects like synthetic progesterone, desoxycorticosterone and testosterone; but no exact quantitative statement was as yet possible about the antifibromatogenic activity of dehydrocorticosterone.
