Carbon utilization in denitrifying biofilters

Abstract
Denitrification has been examined in pilot-scale upflow and downflow submerged filters. The filters have been operated on presettled wastewater, pre-precipitated wastewater, and nitrified effluent with external carbon source. The degradability of the incoming carbon is shown to be significant for the denitrification capacity of the wastewater. Soluble easy hydrolyzable organics are only partly degradedduring passage through the filters. Particulate organics trapped in the filter, however, contribute to the denitrification as part of the particles are hydrolyzed.
