Abstract
Schools are not educating pupils for a multi-cultural society. It is no wonder that they do not cater adequately for the needs of black people; the failure of black pupils in schools demonstrates clearly the inequality in the education system. Many parents have taken the initiative to meet the educational needs of their children by taking matters into their own hands. Ivan Henry (1979) believes that ‘three factors have contributed to the present state of affairs in schools, namely: the low expectation of teachers; the absence of black models in the day to day lives of children for them to emulate; and events taking place outside the school. Keywords
