Abstract
American research has, when it has looked at all contemporary culture, concentrated on Lasswell’s famous “who”, “to whom”, and “with what effect”, while European research has stressed the “what” and “in what channel” of the Lasswellian dictum. Yet in the final analysis, mainstream sociology in both Western Europe and America, has only recently, and grudgingly, conceded that a study of culture — especially contemporary culture — is feasible and, above all, of great import.
