Lactic Streptococcal Phage-Associated Lysin. I. Lysis of Heterologous Lactic Streptococci by a Phage-Induced Lysin

Abstract
When Streptococcus lactis strain C10 cells are lysed by their homologous c10 phage, a phage-associated lysin is released. The lysin which produced halos around phage plaques on agar is released in broth media. Both living and sensitized C10 cells are lysed, and all heterologous lactic streptococcal strains examined are lysed by the clO lysin. The lysin is inactive on a lysozyme-sensitive strain of Sarcina lutea and exhibits limited action on Micrococcus lysodeikticus substrate cells (Difco). The role of the lysin in the nascent phenomenon is discussed.
