Abstract
The aquatic habitat contained within the leaf of the pitcher plant S. purpurea has a dissolved O2 concentration consistently in excess of 77% saturation despite a high community respiration rate. The O2 concentration is maintained primarily by diffusion through the wall of the sarcophagus and is not affected by plant photosynthesis. Because of the consistently high O2 concentrations the inquiline M. knabi is not tolerant of lowered O2 concentrations, as it is adapted to a habitat with a consistently high O2 concentration. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
