Abstract
The complexities of managing migratory insect pests are reviewed. The roles of forecasting and preventive management strategies are discussed and illustrated from a variety of taxa and geographical areas, emphasizing the need to understand the effects of weather on migration. The potential of preventive management has not been exploited widely, partly through ignorance of the migratory ability of many insect pest species, and partly through the difficulties of founding and maintaining the operational organizations. Keywords
