Augmented Anti-SIII Antibody Responses to an SIII-Protein Conjugate

Abstract
Rabbits that had been primed with type III pneumococci (PnIII) manifested striking anamnestic anti-type-specific polysaccharide (SIII) responses to challenge with a covalent conjugate of SIII and bovine γ globulin (BGG) if they had received an intervening immunization with BGG. If no supplemental BGG immunization was given, the SIII-BGG complex caused no secondary anti-SIII response in primed animals. Furthermore, a single intravenous dose of SIII-BGG complex elicited a primary anti-SIII antibody response in rabbits. These results were interpreted in the light of cooperative cellular interactions in immune responses. An approach of this sort may be suitable for clinical immunization against a variety of bacterial polysaccharides.
