Setting Cotton Fabric without Covalent Cross-Links

Abstract
An analysis of the general concept of fabric setting is presented. Kesults of investi gations involving breaking and rebuilding of secondary valence forces in cotton with different alkali hydroxides and inorganic salts in water or organic solvent solutions are reported. The effect of wet setting treatments without covalent cross-linking on such mechanical properties of fabrics as stiffness and strength. wash-and-wear rating, and dimensional stabilization has been determined. Results from an industrial experiment with zinc chloride setting are also given.
