Abstract
A study of deaths occurring during prophylactic administration of chloramphenicol to premature infants is presented. The potential toxicity of this agent in this age group is implied strongly, if not proven. It is noted that the revised dose of chloramphenicol for the premature infant now advised is 25 mg/kg/24 hr., and for the full-term newborn is 50 mg/kg/24 hr. These data point out the necessity of more careful evaluation of drugs prior to their release for administration to infants, especially to the premature infant. Keywords
