Abstract
A preliminary magnetic survey of the Western Approaches to the English Channel reveals a marked wsw- ene lineation of the anomalies. This is considered to reflect the relief of the metamorphic and igneous basement, which in turn delineates an Hercynian structural trend. Variations in the amplitudes of individual anomalies are probably due largely to the variety of rock-types within the basement rather than to large-scale variations in its topography. It is suggested that the Cornubian batholith and the outcrops of basement material in the Lizard and Start Point districts are related to the structural accommodation of the change in the Hercynian trend direction in the south-west peninsula. The possible extension of the anomaly pattern over the continental shelf edge points to the need for further surveying over the continental rise off the Western Approaches, and over the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, in order to test current ideas on the nature of the continental margin. Keywords
