Abstract
The frequency of varicocele in normal men and its incidence according to age were studied in view of the relationship of this condition to infertility, to discoveries by spermatic venography, and to recent improvements in technique of operative treatment. Varicocele occurred in 8% of otherwise apparently normal men. It was found in appreciable numbers of older men, evidently appearing in most cases during adolescence and persisting throughout life. Local discomfort is due to varicocele in a few cases and if unrelieved by external scrotal support may necessitate operation. Subfertility is sometimes associated with varicocele and may also be an indication for surgery. Satisfactory cure rates may be expected after ligation of the spermatic vein at or above the internal inguinal ring.
