Abstract
Using the pressure gradient technique developed by Fry, the instantaneous blood pressure and flow were measured simultaneously in the ascending aorta of 5 patients with clinically proven hypertrophic sub-aortic stenosis and in 5 normal control subjects. In each patient with hypertrophic sub-aortic stenosis an abnormal phasic flow contour was demonstrated. In the normal subjects 57% of the stroke volume occurred during the first half of systole. In the patients with hypertrophic sub-aortic stenosis 80% of the stroke volume occurred in the first half of systole. Thus the cardiac ejection is markedly diminished during the latter half of systole in patients with hypertrophic sub-aortic stenosis. Keywords
