Basal Ornithopoda

Abstract
Ornithopoda is a clade of bipedal and unarmored herbivorous dinosaurs with complex dentitions. It includes the small heterodontosaurids from the Early Jurassic and euornithopods, which range widely in body size and are known from the Middle Jurassic to the end of the Cretaceous. This chapter examines the anatomy, phylogeny, and paleobiology of basal ornithopods. Many of the ornithopods described in this chapter, particularly heterodontosaurids, are among the smallest known ornithischians. Fossil remains of heterodontosaurids are distributed in South Africa, the United States, England and China. Basal euornithopods have been collected from Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, North America, and Antarctica.
