Abstract
Census and survey data reveal that the population of older women is growing larger (over 19 million expected by the year 2000), and increasingly consists of relatively healthy, educated, non-poor, nativeborn women who are not employed and who are not living with a spouse. The involvement of these women in socially significant activities is quite limited, and there are impediments to their greater participation. A task of great importance for social gerontologists is the designing of new opportunities for the engagement of older women into socially constructed activities. Keywords
