STUDIES ON THE URINARY EXCRETION OF GONADOTROPHINS DURING THE NORMAL MENSTRUAL CYCLE IN YOUNG WOMEN

Abstract
Summary: Excretion values for urinary follicle‐stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and pregnanediol during the menstrual cycle have been reported in six young women. In five out of the six cycles ovulation as judged by pregnanediol assays took place. The pattern of LH output was reasonably consistent being characterized by a sharp peak at midcycle. The mean value was 11·1±1·1 i.u. per 24 hours (S.E.). No consistent pattern of FSH output was observed although levels tended to be at their maximum following the midcycle LH peak. The mean value was 7·3±0·7 i.u. per 24 hours (S.E.).The ratio FSH/LH was higher in the luteal phase of the cycle than at midcycle and immediately before the occurrence of menstruation.
