Abstract
From the premise that the modelling approximation for an integrated numerical-prediction model is given by a constraint on the stability factor in the first law of thermodynamics for adiabatic flow, a three-parameter baroclinic model is devised. The resulting flow equations contain development terms which reflect interaction between surface and 500-millibar effects. It is shown that the three-parameter model is a natural outgrowth of an attempt to render two-parameter models internally consistent.
